Hot tubs are generally made from vinyl, rotomolded plastic, or acrylic.  

Vinyl Hot Tubs

Vinyl hot tubs are usually used in tandem with another material, like cement. Similar to an inground pool, a cement frame is installed and a vinyl liner is then constructed to cover the cement. This could be a great option if you are looking to save on up-front cost, since it is an inexpensive way to create a hot tub. However, when it comes to durability, a vinyl liner hot tub does not hold up against pressure, weather, or time. It also uses more electricity to heat up, which means it costs you more over time.

Rotomolded Plastic Hot Tubs

Rotomolded hot tubs use a plastic powder, which is melted and then applied to a mold by rotating it until everything has been covered evenly. It produces a matte finish effect and is also less expensive during the initial purchase. This type of hot tub is lighter than other types, which makes it easier to move around within your yard. Unfortunately, it does not hold in heat very well, making it expensive to run as well.

Acrylic Hot Tubs

An acrylic hot tub starts with a sheet of acrylic material that is melted and formed over a mold. Air is removed with a vacuum through hundreds of small holes, allowing the acrylic to lay snugly against the mold for a smooth and beautiful finish. When the acrylic mold has cooled and become hard, resin and fiberglass are mixed and used to reinforce the underside of the shell, making it stronger and providing added insulation. This type of hot tub is energy efficient and built to last. Acrylic hot tubs are heavier than rotomolded plastic, so you’ll want to decide where to put it before installation. They are also more expensive initially, but will save you a lot of money in heating costs and replacing worn out parts.
